Senior Consultant

Dr. Dave Williams

Dr. Dave Williams joined the CCI team in 2010. He brings his unique experience as an astronaut and a medical doctor to leadership training.

Although he describes himself as, “just a curious kid from Saskatchewan,” Dr. Williams has piloted jets, been launched twice into the stratosphere on the space shuttle and dived the depths of the sea.

In 1992, as one of 5,300 applicants for the space program and ultimately, one of only four selected, he joined the ranks of the fewer than 500 individuals chosen for a space mission.

Dr. Williams logged over 13 million miles in space and participated in ground-breaking research on microgravity and its effects on the brain and nervous system. He orbited on space shuttles Columbia and Endeavor. During his service on the International Space Station, he made three spacewalks – leading two – and set a Canadian record.

Following his space missions, he assumed the prestigious role of Director of The Space & Life Sciences Directorate at the Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas. Now back in Canada, Dave continues his medical career.

During presentations, Dr. Williams stresses that neither medicine nor space travel tolerates any margin of error. And, since both require being a member of a team, the ability to be both a good leader and follower can have life and death implications. Citing the principles of leadership and follower-ship acquired during NASA training in preparation for the extreme challenges of spacewalking, Dr. Williams emphasizes there is no insignificant job on a team, whether leading the team or playing a supporting role.
