What defines Micro-facial Expressions?
- A very, very brief facial movement
- Lasts only a fraction of a second
- Betrays what is not being expressed
- Reveals a specific but hidden emotion
- Is almost undetectable
The ability to read these flash messages is critical to understanding what really is being “said.” Curiously, expert researchers have proven only a minute percentage of the world’s entire population is predisposed to decode these expressions without training. Scientists refer to these individuals as “Wizards;” this gives you an indication of how few they are in number.
These same world-renowned researchers and scientists have also shown that although physical gestures are cultural, Micro-facial Expressions, based on emotions, are universal. In other words, a sense of fear triggers the same facial muscles in the Peruvian businessman as the Mongolian herdsman. This expression of fear, however, is equally brief across all cultures and lasts only a microsecond. Similarly, disgust is registered by other facial muscles than those of fear, resulting in a different expression, albeit one shared by everyone from the sophisticated cosmopolitan to a country farmer.
